Vernacular Name :  Surinam Cherry
Scientific Name   :  Eugenia uniflora



Surinam Cherry (Eugenia uniflora) and is also known as Brazillian Cherry from the family

of Myrtaceae with its origin from the East Coast of South America distributing from

Suriname to South Brazil. The plant can grow up to 8m with white flowers and reddish

shoots and immature leaves; perfectly to create a bonsai plant.


Its fruits will change colour from greenish to dark blood red when mature.  Due to its

similarity in shape, is known locally as sweet malay gooseberry "cermai" in Malaysia

with its taste ranging from sour to sweet. The fruits are high in anti-oxidant

and vitamin C.
